Back in 2006 I bought my wife's S80 D5 at a BCA auction. I paid £13,600 and when I looked later in the week similar cars sold at that auction were on sale with Volvo dealers for £19,600.

With the internet it's easy and you don't even need to go to the auction.

There's a lot of Volvos going at BCA blackbushe this week. Look at them, write down a few reg numbers that you're interested in, and watch the websites for them to come up for sale, sometimes I've seen them advertised the same day before they are even delivered to the dealer.

The best, or worst, I have ever seen was a couple of months ago at Birmingham BCA. I saw a rare and very desirable Merc go at auction for £22,300.

A week later it was advertised at a Cheshire car showroom at £49,950!
I'm sure it happens but I'm also sure it's not the norm, my Dad works for a large VAG group that also deal in used cars from any brand, it's a retirement job for him and usually collects cars (or drops them off etc) that dealers have bought privately to sell on the forecourt.
The mark ups are pretty small maybe a few thousand at best much like when you part ex and see it on the forecourt a few weeks later, this is to be expected we all know that selling to a dealer you will not get the best price as they need to make a profit in return and if you do get a good price that's probably because they made more profit on the car you bought from them so they are happier to take a hit on the part ex.

A lot of the dealer scheme used cars I saw were not worth the money, the list price of my V40 was 34.5k I paid 26.4k for it brand new with 7 miles on the clock, a similar dealer used V40 was 23k with 7000miles on the clock and several months old, I know which I'd prefer....

Well, well well. OP here.
Guess what? Test drove car. Walked away, reluctantly, as dealer wouldn't budge on price/px changeover cost etc.
No follow up from dealer for 3 days, until a message: "We've got others- here they are..." followed by an almost casual aside "oh, and that car you tested has been reduced by £700."
Collecting car Saturday.
Happy days
