Is it me...
Or do new-build houses have garages that are much smaller than I remember them being when I was younger?
Moved into a (rented) new place a few weeks back, had a quick look in the garage when viewing and it seemed spacious enough, came to put the C70 in it for the first time the other day and could only just fit it through the door, likewise the length was barely ok to close it up afterwards. I know it's a big-ish car but it's not exactly huge, I was planning my next car to be a mid-90s Jaguar XJ and I think now that idea has just gone straight out of the window... Photo attached (if I've worked out how to do that correctly)

Of course they're smaller. So are the gardens.
They're dead money to greedy developers who'll shave inches and feet where they can so they can squeeze in another plot.

Having been in the Architectural profession for almost 30 years i can tell you unequivocally yes, they are smaller. As Chesired5 above said, greedy bloody developers and the main cause. Each additional square meter of house/garage is around £1000 to build at the lower end of the market so less area per unit means more units per development and therefore more profit.

Yup, as are the bedrooms, new build houses are often dressed with sub-standard sized beds. So when you move in with normal sized furniture, the doors don't even open as they hit the standard sized bed.
Very few new builds are of any interest to me, as the market dictates people are not interested in a property that will stand for any length of time and of any decent build quality. |

It's not just a new thing - back in the early 80's, I lived in a spanking-new house in the middle of a big muddy field, that became a building site of several developers (some of them well-known, some now disappeared.....). With the exception of two builders, every show-house had the doors missing between the rooms. One of them had a show-house that I measured surreptitiously one evening whilst it was being built. All rooms were 1foot bigger in each dimension than the "selling houses" or the published plans! They're still in business, but I cannot fathom how!
