Synchro on 3rd
Hi all,
Driving home I lost all gears on my manual 2L at a traffic island to the disgust of those behind me. switched the engine off and on before being able to move. Noticed the clutch pedal hadn’t come back up. Pulled up and restarted the engine with 2nd selected to get me to a safe place. Chatted on FB messenger to NW member who suggested high reving and trying to get into third gear which in hindsight wasnt the best thing to do. AA man turned up suggested it may be the clutch master failed and the synchro suspect. So when the engine is cold I can use for about a mile third gear then the classic crunch appear, where you don’t even try and select once the engine is warm. Parts life status. Gearbox 295k miles Clutch 120k 20 years old Gearbox oil just changed Original slave and master but have a new slave to be fitted purchased from frf Volvo. So is it the worn clutch or am I looking for the 3rd 4th synchro need renovating and if soo suggestions of where and possible cost? Thank Markas

Sounds like a possible lazy/leaky slave cylinder therefore not disengaging the clutch sufficiently.
Which type of slave do you have, Markas? If you can see it to the front of the gearbox you have a relatively easy fix but, unfortunately, if it's internal (concentric) it's a box out jobbie. I hope it's the former!

Agree with Baffler, sort the clutch first before worrying about the synchro, a dragging clutch will defeat even a perfect working synchro, with a fully working clutch you might well find the engagement problems go away.

Update still a problem
Update guys,
So have the gearbox oil changed as it was 20 years old since my last clutch change. The Volvo sourced slave was changed. So when the engine and gearbox is cold I can drive for about ten minutes and as long as I don’t drive enthusiastic I can use third gear. But after 10 minutes or five miles changing the expected it won’t go in and that horrible grinding sound. If I come to a stop drop the clutch I can select all gears, occasionally reverse if hard and four. So is this pointing to the synchro on 3rd mainly and possibly worn on the others? Should I just attack the clutch next and maybe the flywheel as it’s all original (120k on this clutch) before I throw loads and having the gearbox rebuilt. Thanks, Markas

Still sounds to me like the clutch is dragging - for what reason I can't comment, but it's that area that needs investigation, my guess would still be the hydraulics rather than the actual plates, springs etc.
