Default high pitch noice

Hi

I am a new owner of a 2010 XC70 D5 AWD Automatic

I took it on a long drive yesterday from Hexham down to Peterborough and back. Car behaved very nicely but on the way back I had twice a high pitch noice coming from what I think was the back and the second time there was some whitish dust / smoke behind the car. It happened after I was stuck behind a car that was going from 70 down to 50 mph back to 70 mph and that happened a couple of times before he moved over.
The car was shifting constantly between gears when this happened.

This was around Doncaster and after that it didn't happen again and the car drove normal without any problems.

I read the codes this morning with iCarsoft V2.0 and no problems where found. All fluid levels are also normal.

Maybe it is nothing and that it was something on the road itself, but maybe somebody experienced something similar and knows what it could have been?

Thank you for your answer Simmy.
I haven't had a car with DPF before so wasn't aware that this was going to make a noise.

Dont't think it should have changed down a gear at 50?

It is possible that it changed down to keep the revs up to maintain the regen.

In a manual the gear change guidance will suggest changing up at higher speeds than normal.

The speed was changing a couple of times between 50 and 70 mph.
