Keeping the door open
The drivers door of my 1991 240 SE no longer keeps itself open. The other doors are fine and have two 'positions' that they will happily stay open in, but the drivers one has given up.
Does anybody know if there is adjustment I can make or something that is easily replaced to cure this? Many thanks, David |

Could be the two small "cog wheels" on the hinge. If they are not greased they will not turn and wear out, allowing the door to swing freely.
Are you likely to get to the Nottingham Trent Valley section meeting, 1st Wednesday in the month at The Olde Bridge Inn Oxton from about 7.30? If so we could discuss this problem then, same thing happened on my '93 240. regards, Richard. |

I have exactly the same problem with the front doors on my 240GLT.
You'd think that there would be some sort of adjustment on the spring, but no such luck. I have made up a couple of spacers which fit in the top of the spring recess in the hinge, which seem to be helping. The spacers were plastic, just a bodge job to see if it worked, I'm going to make up a couple of metal ones when I can get at a lathe (perhaps next weekend?)

Please report back if you actually work out a fix on this. Both front doors on the son's 1988 245 are like this. I assumed that the only possible repair was replacing the hinges, and have taken hinges from (less used) rear doors from junked cars. They are the wrong colour though, so if I go this route I need to degrease and paint them. A simpler repair would be welcome!

Hello there, if you are there at the notts trent meet I have a spare hinge you can have, and possibly fit on that night for you with the help of Richard and a few others, the best prevention of this is to keep them greased

The only solution I have found is to use a good rear door hinge and keep lubricated. Getting the right colour is difficult.

Thanks for all the input guys.
I won't faff around trying to make the old one work if a new hinge would fix it, there's a good GLT in the local breakers so I'll go and pinch yet more parts from that. I'm afraid I won't be at the Notts area meet either; I'm currently living in Chichester... (must update that profile entry though!). David |
