Default S60 2.4 weird noise from engine

Hello!

I was hoping the community can help me figure this out. As the title states, my 2001 S60 2.4 (with the B5244S2 engine) is making a strange noise that I can’t get my head around. It’s a sort of pulsating, humming noise that rises and falls with the revs. You can hear it in this video: https://streamable.com/snfey4

I’ve tried running the engine without the serpentine belt, and it doesn’t make a difference. I’ve also tried unplugging the vvt thing by the cam gear, to no avail. Noise is still there. It also doesn’t matter if the car is cold or warm.

Any ideas?

My money is on the timing belt tensioner.

Have you checked for a blocked PCV with the rubber glove method?

Timing belt done recently? Tensioner could be too tight which can cause that noise.

I couldn't discern any bad noise.

However, do your front wheels steer smoothly? I ask because the top of the strut's piston looks off-center as if the spring seat's center part (metal) has separated from the dense rubber part. They appear higher than usual too.

Timing belt was done in 2017 according to the service history and the car hasn't been used much since then. I thought it might be the water pump, but when I took a look under the cover that looked very clean, as if it was replaced recently. So I don't know.

I really haven't given this a thought at all, haha. The car drives absolutely fine, no issues with the suspension 🤷

The noise is the same when the oil cap is off, so I don't think that's the issue.
