Side-lights are front, tail-lights are rear.

I found it an absolute pain to change these, ended up buying some long needle nose pliers and replaced with LED w5w bulbs so that I won't have to do it again any time soon.

Does the car warn of blown bulbs and if so do LEDs screw up that function?

Yes it does warn of blown sidelight bulbs, it is quite happy with the LED ones I've fitted - no warnings. I purchased them quite a while ago but I can try and find out what they were?

Does that mean that you don't get false warnings or that you don't get any warnings?

If you stick to well known makes and buy CANBUS friendly bulbs, then it shouldn't give warnings, HOWEVER that isn't what I found on my 2011 V70. I have stopped it by fitting a resistor inline in the wiring going to the sidelight (inside the headlight casing, held in place with a zip tie). I paid a premium price by buying a resistor pack produced by the bulb manufacturer (OSRAM 5W CANBUS CONTROL UNIT KIT 12V DASH ERROR WARNING CANCELLER ERROR FREE on Bay), however it works! It shows sidelight bulb failure on start up for a second, but then goes off and stays off.

As to getting the bulbs out - don't use the plastic pull tab supplied, just use needle nose pliers on the bulb holder and twist...

I see your point, no warnings - but they haven't failed yet so I don't know if I will be warned when they do.
