Yes.The tyres on the same axle have to be the same – with the same tread and groove depth.Any differences, especially in tread pattern, may be fatal.
On similar lines, somebody once posted on here that a rear tyre blow-out at speed was uncontrollable and would almost certainly be fatal. I explained - gently, I hope - that I'd had a rear tyre blow-out at 70 mph a few weeks earlier myself, and was very much alive to tell the tale. In fact, there'd been a quiet pop, and then a bit of a rumbling noise, so I pulled over and found a shredded tyre. No drama at all.
