Default 15" to 14"??

I'm sure I recall someone telling me that the 14" 240 wheel will not fit my 140 but can anyone confirm (clearance issues I think)?

Comp rules mean I can't use anything with a lower profile than 70 series and my favoured 185/70 x 15 are becoming rare and brutally expensive. 175/70 x 15 virtually gone from the racks and 165/80 x 15 is hopeless unless it snows.

Choice in 185/70 x 14 is endless and I could live with the speedo issue.

At the moment I use early 240 wheels with 185/80 r14 tyres on my 1970 yearmodel 144 ("short wheel base"). It has Ate front calipers, which are nicely rounded and compact. I can just get a fingertip between caliper and the wheel.
Don't know how these would fit on Girling front calipers, which stick out more on the corners.

You could fit even wider 70 tyres on 740 15" rims.

If you're rallying, are 205/70s any good? Quite a few of those seem to be performance / road going 4x4 tyres (hence the high profile) & not too silly money either.

I'm allowed to go up 1" in width from standard 165mm so hence the 185 choice. I picked up some GLT wheels a while back with 195's on and they were VERY tight at the rear.

I've just heard from Rob at Amazon Cars who reckons it should be ok with perhaps a little 'smoothing' of the caliper edge required if an alloy was used.

Hi No problem I have been fitting 14in 240 wheels to 164s and 140s for many years with no problema whatsoever. with 185 tires they improve the road holding and the ride. I have both steel and alloy wheels for sale if you are interested contact me on mikeh7@tiscali.co.uk Mike.

That is odd because I have had lots of problems with fitting 14's to 140 with them not fitting because the caliper is in teh way.

Give some a try and see what happens.
