Hi I have a 71 P1800E running through my list of jobs, one is the overdrive switch, which although i have the steering column overdrive stalk switch it is wired to nothing, instead the overdrive is wired to a toggle switch fitted to an auxilary plate self tapped under the dash. I am presuming the stalk switch is broken hence its been rewired, and plan once checked the original stalk switch to replace it if broken. but something is nagging me saying that there were different wiring looms that were changed over the years and if i just rewire it to the stalk switch unless i check that its the 1800e loom i could blow my fuses, or am i talking rubbish.
Thanks |

Changing a pair of wires from 1 switch to another will not change the circuit current. Your column mounted switch is designed for the circuit so cannot present a problem. As you say the switch is possibly faulty.

I chased a lot of overdrive problems recently... narrowed it down to a dodgy switch (stalk type) so they can and do go wrong. Eliminated the relay, wiring, OD connections, solenoid, oil level in the box...
Rig up rocker switch (couple of quid to buy if you don't have one) and see if this solves the problem. TOP TIP: If you're checking wiring at the gearbox with the ignition on, make sure the car is not in neutral as the OD only works in fourth and you won't get a reading!! (yes, I am an idiot sometimes!) |

This reminds me- does anyone have a spare nut for the overdrive stalk? Or can tell me exactly what the size is? I've never had one and it's always been an annoyance. Cheers. Tony.
