Default Windscreen top weather strip advice to remove needed

The windscreen of my 1999 V70 is leaking at the top edge where it joins roof (checked it with buckets of water) I need to remove the weather strip trim (see thumbnail pic of windscreen) to find the exact place and hopefully seal it with silicon leak sealant. Could anyone advise how to remove the weather strip trim across the top of screen?

May not be as easy as you think, the screen is bonded in and may need to be removed and resealed.

Some of these top seals are a "T" shape, once the screen is bonded and whilst the same is still wet the seal gets pushed into place and is then held secure.

I'm not sure if the above applies to the Volvo - a quick look at my car I would hazard a guess at being correct. Sometimes the seal can be pulled away but Polyurethane adhesive is normally very strong- if it does come away it is a bit hit & miss regarding being damaged (tears) or broken.

The above if removed may have fragments of the rubber base left in place and this would have to be cut out so the new seal can sit flat.
An alternative is to leave in place and extrude a heavy bead of screen sealer along the length i.e. under the rubber- any excess can be removed with white spirit- to be effective the area must be completely dry- the sealant can be warmed to aid flow etc.
This product is good:~ https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221933629...oAAOSwT5ZfyPs6
Good Luck
Bob.

Default Leaking Windscreen Seal

An alternative product worth trying is Seek 'N' Seal.

Used it on my classic cars before they became classics, so it has been around for a while. It is a clear liquid, so no major problem cleaning up excess from the paintwork afterwards, and as is says, is designed to seep into all the small gaps. Available from the usual on-line outlets.

Thanks for help with this. It looks like the top weather strip is bonded in place (as described by Bob) and cannot be removed.

I've established the leaking areas are across the top and down the passenger side of screen. I can see what looks like small clips attached to the passenger side windscreen pillar, between the pillar and the weather strip that runs down the passenger side of screen. Does anyone know if this passenger side section of windscreen weather strip can be removed? The clips suggest it can.

My plan is to get the top and passenger side of screen clean and dry, then use Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure leak sealer (the equivalent of Seek N Seal which I can't find any sellers of) to reach and seal the leaks.
It would help if the rubber weather strip on the passenger side of the screen can first be removed.

Default Leaking Windscreen Seal

You think you know your car and then read someone's post and start to doubt what you thought it was like, so went out this morning at looked at my windscreen.

What you describe as the seal on the A-pillar appears to be a finishing strip that, as you say, is attached over the windscreen seal and is held by metal clips.

The left side one on my car is loose at the bottom and I can gently lift it away from the screen and see a tab, which should presumable be fixed by a clip. It looks as if it could be pulled up and detached but as it runs up to the roof and under the roof rail front mounting then it would require a bit of gentle manipulation to clear the back of the front wing and straightening out where it bends over the roof.

I don't know if you have roof rails but if you have I would just leave the strip attached under the mounting and only straighten the strip enough it to allow enough room to reach the seal.

If yours is like mine then it will require a good clean before using the Captain Tolley's.

I believe that the side trims are held in place by plastic clips that are secured to the metal frame posts:~
These in theory should allow the trim to pulled away- clips like these are prone to breaking but can be replaced- the trim does indeed run up and along the roof sides so like most jobs on cars it becomes something else!

If you look on line you should find a couple of video's for models that are near your car age and these will give some pointers- as with any screen work go carefully.
Good luck.
Bob.

Thanks guys. The side trim weather strip removed just like you described. I didn’t need to remove it completely, just far enough up to clear the top corner of the screen so the seal down the passenger side is visible. A lot of dirt collected there needed cleaning out.

After cleaning I put the Captain Tolley’s across the top and down passenger side of screen. It says to leave it 24 hrs to cure. It was very thin liquid so don't know if it will seal a big leak? but I've got some bathroom silicone sealant to use if the Tolley’s doesn't totally plug it.
It's the standard white silicone that's used to seal sinks and baths.
