Alternator brushes
Hi all. Minor problem...
My alternator brushes have work out again! I put in a new alternator less than two years and about 30000 miles ago because they wore out in about three months. So, 20 months and 30000 miles later they're gone again. Is that to be expected? If I can't find new ones today I can't go to the meet tomorrow

Woo yay!
Four places later, some dodgy bloke and his old mate found one in a drawer somewhere Thank god for small hidden away auto shops... BTW I also phoned up Pilling in Hemel. They could sell me one for £130! I can get a new alternator for that... See you all tomorrow

Alternator brushes
I have also been having charging problems and have traced it back to the brushes. I phoned my local dealer and got a replacement part for £34.12
I replaced the brushes/voltage regulator this morning and all seems ok now, The volt gauge is looking healthy again. As far as I know these were the 3rd set of brushes in the last 20 years. Ian |

Brushes have to rub on something rotating (is it a commutator, as in a dynamo?). So if that is worn, won't it quickly wear out new brushes too?
I'm on my second alternator now. The original failed at 235,000 miles, replaced by one that cost £1 at a car boot. Still going strong at 351,000 miles. |
