03 d5 auto as a tow car, comments and suggestions please
Hi there...
I could be looking for another tow car... I have spotted a v70 d5 it is a 2003 registered car and the guy selling says it has a sequential auto gearbox... Can any of you give me any reassurance that this box is up to towing, I regularly tow a twin axle car trailer with smallish golf sized cars on board. Your comments and experiences would be appreciated Thanks again

I towed with a 2004 XC70 D5 auto for 6 years without problems.
During that time I covered at least 20000 miles with either a 1500 Kg caravan or a one tonne trailer. Don't worry about the auto box, providing the ATF is clean, it is perfectly suitable for towing. There is not any need for additional oil cooling or any other modifications, just tow and enjoy! The only thing you need to do is check that the auto box is working correctly and that the ATF is clean before you buy it. If the car has done anything over 75 - 80,000 miles, it would be worth changing the ATF as this will help prevent problems developing.

Thanks again for your comments and information.
The reason I asked the question was that my daily 740 GLT had suddenly lacked power while towing the other evening. Since then I have stripped down the engine and found a burnt valve, I am going down the route of repairing things and replacing the piston rings etc to hopefully give the car and new lease of life, it would be a shame to see another 16 valve 740 bite the dust, there can not be many left, I have not seen another in the time I have had this one. Thanks again for your comments
