Default Engine mounts

I've been wondering how much of a difference a brand new set will make to a 2011 V70; has anyone done theirs?

I've been thinking the same thing: 2011 D3 manual, 140k.

What prompted you to ask the question?

Done it not so long ago on my Dad's V70 with 163,000 (2008). His mounts were as flat as a pancake and the engine vibrated a fair bit. Since replacement, it has improved things. Although, I wouldn't say it has made a significant improvement either. Driving, you wouldn't really notice... Its idling where its slightly better. The D5 engine still has a 'rumble' anyway, as its not the most refined unit fitted to a car.

The main dealer was out of the question, as the prices they wanted were ridiculous and they didn't have one of them in stock anyway. I ended up getting a Febi mount for the driver's side underneath the torque rod mount and a Lemforder for the passenger side, which sits underneath the airbox/fuse box.

Check the condition of the torque rod too (the one that looks like a dog bone). There's also a mount underneath the car, near the oil sump. That was also changed a while ago. So engine mounts wise, they've all been done.

Just done it on my 2011 XC90 with 140k on it. 2 new vacuum mounts, torque mount and solid mount.

Transformed the car, no vibration at tickover now, much smoother.

Cost £400 in parts though....

I think this is the most likely cause of my new vibration/shake at tickover (174,000 miles). The car drives absolutely perfectly, so I don't think it's an injector...

Well...watching a Youtuber fix up a Mazda MX-5! He changed the engine mounts which made a massive difference to handling and (more importantly) noise and vibrations. Most of his videos are on V70 MK2 if anyone is interested:

My engine isn't shaking in fact it just sits there ticking along BUT on idle it feel noisy (to me) sitting inside and would prefer it to be quieter.

Good logic! I imagine a faulty injector would be a significant imbalance throughout the rev-range.

It seems what's left to do are the rear trailing arms bushes AND maybe the engine mounts...

Engine mounts won't make a bit of difference if the engine is "noisy".

They'll help with vibrations and smoother idling, but they won't cure engine noise.

If its the noise I'm thinking of, like a tug boat sound. That's more than likely due to a clogged intake manifold, dirty EGR valve and worn hydraulic lifters.

Sorry I should have been more clear: the engine isn't visibly shaking, and I can feel some vibrations and sound when sitting at the lights.

As for the sound you're thinking off...not sure I guess we would need to put our cars side by side to know for sure. I thought the "tapping" sounds (which are quite loud without the engine cover) where the injectors actuating? My EGR valve is very clean, and I suspect the intake manifold is FILTHY (2011 D3 125k).

To an extent its the injectors noising, but if the lifters are worn, you'll definitely hear a slight ticking noise on acceleration or revving especially. If you're feeling vibrations at lights, it could be engine mounts, but I'd suspect injectors.

The intake is filthy largely because of the EGR... it recirculates. So if your EGR is clean, but it was badly dirty before you cleaned it, then its likely that the intake is gunked up too. No diesel intake is ever going to be sparkling clean though for a long period of time.

It depends how much you want to invest into it. Changing the engine mounts is fairly cheap and not difficult to do. Cleaning the intake is a different ball game. Injectors have to come out, new rocker cover gasket is required to reseat the intake after cleaning, new sealing rings for the injectors when putting them back in... Its not a five minute job and probably a few hundred in labour if a garage was doing it.

Same applies to injectors, they aren't cheap either. You can do a leak test to see how the injectors are performing, or use VIDA to see the fuel trim data.
