2008 XC70 stall on idle
Hi all
Very occasionally the old girl will splutter and stall just as you go to pull away after idling for a while (heavy traffic for example). Not often, 4 times since last December. She won't start again (but will turn over) until I take the key out and back in again. Then first time on the button and runs beautifully after that. Just recently got a hold of VIDA and it looks like the fuel pressure regulator (see attached screenshot). Would that be a fair assessment? Trouble now is, looking at online tutorials they all seem to be for the very simply petrol regulator which looks very easy to take off and replace. Can't seem to find any on the diesel version which doesn't look quite as straight forward. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to replace it? Many thanks. Richard |

You have 3 codes there;
MAP sensor Fuel control valve Fuel pressure regulator The fuel ones I would say would relate more to the stalling problems you're having. Has the car had a fuel filter changed recently? If not, I'd start with that first. A bad/blocked fuel filter can throw all sorts of codes and a new filter can make all the difference. As for where the fuel pressure regulator and fuel control valve are located, I'm unsure of that. If I had a guess, I'd say at the end of the fuel rail near the injectors. VIDA will tell you though. The MAP sensor isn't easy to change. Its in a very awkward location, basically underneath the intercooler/transmission cooler. It can be done from above in the engine bay, but be warned, there really isn't much room. Some people remove the front bumper, but that seems a bit far fetched to me. This video shows what's involved. This guy removed the bumper more or less, but he ended doing the job from above. I think taking the passenger side headlight out might help with access. If you do replace the sensor, don't use some cheap unheard of brand because that won't fix the issue. I believe Bosch make the MAP sensor for Volvo, so buy a Bosch one and you can save money that way. If you buy one from the dealer, it'll be Bosch with a Volvo stamp and cost you probably 3x more.

Many thanks. Fuel filter was replaced very recently so I'll look at the sensors. Just can't find videos / online tutorials on the procedures to replace them. Looks like a simple spanner job but afraid of fuel pressure etc. Might just lump it and take her to a dealer.
