Atera bike rack with hoist

Hi I have inherited 3 Volvo supplied bike carriers with a gas spring lifting arm which I believe are manufactured in Germany by Atera. I wondered if anyone has any experience of these as I am having no joy in operating any of them. I am following the Volvo instructions that came with the equipment and they imply that I should be able to "release the catch and fold out the arm." "fold out" sounds as if it should be easy but even with excessive force I cannot fold out the arm only managing to lift it a few millimetres. I have used such force that I am concerned about breaking the roof rails and this can not be right so can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. All three racks are a few years old but have had very little use and look like new. My Volvo dealer can not help. Looking on the web at several videos the operation looks simple and easy almost effortless. Help please

hi I have some BMW ones made by the same manufacturer I think , the bike base is placed on to your roof bars in the t rack about 10cm from the end & tighten the allen key bolts to secure , fasten the long pole into the base by placing it into the part at the top with the red knob , directly under this there should be another red lever that you pull towards yourself to release the lift & once pulled you should be able to pull the bar towards yourself to be able to put the bike on , if they havent been used for a while maybe some wd40 sprayed inside might help ! It should pull down & click , if it wont click try another base . The mechanism is released by pushing the arm back upwards some of the early models you need to pull the little red leaver towards you again for it to release .
If they still dont work I have some spare bases that work but need sprayed for sale or I will buy them off you for spares for mine as I am always loosing something ?

ps it is normally just trial & error , just be sure to not tighten up the handle bars support before attaching the seat as I have broken 2 off forgetting !
There is a thread on the internet on BMW hydraulic bike lifts that shows them in action maybe worth looking at .

Thanks for your reply.
I eventually sorted my problem with the lifting arm and have used the carriers extensively and found them brilliant
I have now unfortunately broken one of the plastic wheel support extension pieces and wondered if you still had your carriers and by chance have one of these extensions that i could buy from you or even the whole rack.
I know the original posts were in 2013 and my request is out of the blue.
