Another case of adding expensive things to solve a problem that doesn't exist. A tube and a stick work just as well, arguably better and no doubt far cheaper.
Reminds me of the story in the space race in the 1960's. The Americans spent a million dollars developing a pen which could write in zero G.
The Soviets used a pencil.....
Cheers Bob

The problem is the vast majority of volvo drivers just drive their cars from one service to the next and hardly ever open the bonnet. Let alone getting their hands dirty to check oil levels. That's why the instrument is there to make it easy for them and warn them if there is a loss for what ever reason....

Can’t really go wrong.
That's exactly how it works on my car - Two XXs on the dipstick equals full on the digital gauge. By putting in the same volume of oil that I take out it is always pretty much bang on.

I get that, but is encouraging / enabling people to go between services without ever opening the bonnet really a good thing?

That minor problem you would have spotted 10K miles ago is now going to cost you a fortune.

Call me cynical but I'd say its more about generating work for the dealer network than driver convenience.

That's relying on a computer though... it doesn't mean its correct. What about those that do oil changes on these cars and don't reset the oil level gauge via diagnostics, simply because they haven't got diagnostics?

If those that never lift the bonnet from one service to the next decide to open the bonnet, they still can't check the oil level anyway because there's no physical dipstick?
