Any ideas?
1999 v40 2.0t, the car is losing coolant max to min in about 25 miles and I cant find out why, I have changed the oil (perfect no water in it) I have changed the coolant, bottom hose drain (perfect no oil in it) I have checked for leaks day and night hot and cold above and below the car, none, the ac, heater works perfect, no water or smoke out the exhaust even changed the expansion tank cap for one I know works, still no joy?
Any help would be much appreciated. colnet |

That was my first thought but surely there should be some sign? The car runs absolutely perfect, the temp gauge is also spot on and never deviates how ever the car is driven, I am at a total los.

Mine doesn't use water but the difference between hot and cold is the marks for full/empty. If you water never comes back then its lost somewhere, i am sure somebody better qualified will be along soon.

I had a similar issue. Turned out to be the tiny little 6" rubber hose in behind my turbo which is covered with flex metal insulation. The insulation was no longer in place so it was easier to spot. No sign of any leaks until the day my son was late for a soccer game. I gunned it for 30min straight getting the speed and rpm's nice and high. As soon as I pulled over I had smoke visible rising from bonnet seams. Coolant was dripping down and immediately vaporizing on surrounding pipes which were getting pretty rusty as a result. Not sure if that helps you.

Thankyou for replying, any idea what the pipe is for? And how did you repair it? Like I said previously I have tried everything I can think of to cure this fault. Once again thanks for your input.

You can try by putting some pressure on the coolant tank when cold so you are sure the water is not vaporised on a hot surface like heating radiator or engine .
There is a special tool to put the pressure on the tank, even with a pressure gauche so it is possible to monitore the leak. I had also a leak on my other car at the heating radiator and only found it when the carpets became wet. Last edited by loely; Mar 29th, 2017 at 16:16. |

I will try and find the hose pierre was taking about and check that, if no joy I will see if I can find somewhere to pressure test the system, I am slowly, well quite quickly running out of ideas, once again thankyou for your input.

A nice easy test would be to get a uv kit, a little uv torch and bottle of dye, dump it into the coolant go for a drive and then preferable in the shade/dark shine the light around will spot it instantly.
You could pull the spark plugs and have a look inside the bores, if you have clean internals then its leaking into the bore and will steam clean it.

I had a similar issue, I replaced the coolant expansion tank cap with a replacement one and never had a problem with my coolant level since.
