4th Set of tyres in two years
Hi
I have a 58 plate S40 R design and I have just put on the 4th set of tyres in two years and 54000 miles. Any ideas why this is happening and no I do not have a lead foot. |

So you're getting around 13,000 miles on each set. I've heard of people getting less mileage out of their tyres. Do you know if this is the norm with other S40 owners?

Are you running them at the "eco" setting for pressure. IIRC which is 36psi instead of around 30 this will surely increase wear as well as decrease ride comfort but you may save a wee bit on fuel.

That's normal.
I got 8000 out of one set (they were rubbish - P6000's) |

I fitted a set of Nokians on my previous car, a Mondeo, and they barely showed signs of wear after 8000 miles.

9K miles average
Hi, I had an 98' S40 2.0T im sure the suspension set up not probably like yours but it used to do around 9000 miles on a front set of tyres, maybe 10k average, but not much more, rear tyres youl'd probably get 3x as much mileage from. And this was with reasonable driving nothing too lead footed, tyres like P6000. Usually with tyres you trade off grip for mileage, a harder compound lasts longer but wont probably grip as well as a softer one that will wear more quickly. Only my experience over 170,000 miles in an S40.

I get aroung 8-10,000 out of the front tyres normally and around 20,000 out of the rears.

Original fit Pirelli's on my C30 (2.0d) and the fronts will need changing soon at the 24-25,000 mile mark - Rears still going strong (will soon become fronts!).
Most often driven at the Eco setting with a Nitrogen fill. Eco setting does wear the centre more than the sides, hence now reducing the pressures to balence the wear near end of life. |

I'm aware that too much pressure will wear the centre quicker, just as too little will wear the edges too much. However, if car tyres are anything like motorcycle tyres, running pressure a bit high will reduce wear because there will be less "walking" of the tyres; it's movement in the rubber that (on bikes, at least) cause most of the wear by heating up the tyre. Everything within reason, of course
BTW, I noticed on the Mondeo that running roughly the recommended pressure still caused a little more wear in the middle of the tyres compared to the shoulders. |
