it never really worked. i did it, then tried it in the car, but the sound from my ipod into it was all distorted, so not really usable. it may have been ok from another source, but not my ipod

..was the LR lines off the cassette deck at mic level and not line level? Maybe that's why it was distorted. If so, a pad/eq patch would sort that....or trace the lines to the head amp and pick the line level up there.
What We need is a schematic!!! Has no one got access to one?

You could try but it might not make any difference - my first attempt was distorted even with caps. You might be connecting to a very low impedance (characterised by heavy bass cut) and your signal is "clipping". The ground is found by inspection i.e. some point with zero ohms to the deck metal chassis. Don't give up! Regards.

i just need to source some capacitors and find those illusive points on the PCB.

Some really great ideas in this thread. I did something similar when I had a 960. If I recall correctly I put a stereo switched 3.5mm socket into the front panel and, using the switched terminals on the socket, tapped into the feed to the volume control. This meant that whatever was selected, as soon as you plugged in the external device it disabled the radio/cassette/CD and played directly into the power amp. Because of the design of the unit the RDS did still cut in.
The disadvantage was that you had to keep plugging and unplugging the external device when you wanted to change from it to radio.

You're not wrong there!! I just want someone to work out a way of doing it to a newer style HU803!
Gotta be (relatively) simple to fool the unit into thinking it has a cd changer, and tap into the L and R channels with a 3.5mm jack?! Surely?!?

Is that because the volume of sound from the i-pod was too high even on the lowest setting?
