3D Printed VG1 Keyfob Covers
Hi folks,
Just a quick little post to show off what I've been working on recently. I've done a few posts in the past about the VG1 (Volvo Guard alarm system): Volvo Guard 1 Keyfobs Solved: Volvo Guard 1 remote C/L range. and in one I mentioned the prospect of 3D printing the battery lids/covers. Well, I have a 3D printer now and have now designed and printed up some covers. See the pictures here and let me know what you think, I'm not 100% satisfied with the quality yet but in general they work and look better than a gooey wrap of electrical tape! It's probably the nichest of niche markets but if people are interested I can print more of these and if people are really interested I can use other colours than black. Wouldn't be looking for much for them, probably less than £10 delivered in the UK. They rely on using the original screw and spring battery contact salvaged from the original fob. Spring could be bodged and the screw is a black, 2x9mm countersunk self tapper. Cheers

Good job, I repaired mine with a bolt many years ago. Lasted well until the range started to go, then fixed temporarily by the vcap adjustment trick, then eventually the control module died. I don't thing these have much of a life over 20yrs. I've seen 3 failures on 3 cars all around 20yrs, mixture of Guard 1 and 2. Thats not a good percentage.

Thanks, Tony. Yes, they're clearly fraught with problems although fingers crossed mine still seems to be going strong. I replaced the little variable cap in the summer (thanks Forrest for identifying the part number - I bought 20 as they're now no longer made so have some spares if anyone's desperate) and now I have my 20 metre remote range back.
It's a real novelty to be able to use the remote remotely and without one hand squeezing the battery compartment shut while the other presses the button!

Hi James,
Well that's really a great job. I would like to buy 2 black covers from you but I'm in the Netherlands. Don't know if you want to ship them? I have 2 fobs, 1 cover broken so far but I'm afraid the other one will break also one of these days. I think both working but the alarm system in the car is not. The receiver is flashing: ooooonnnnn-off-on-off-ooooonnnnn-off-on-off-ooooonnnnn- etc. Whatever I do this stays the same. 1 backdoor switch is working but the lights are not lit. And I can't find (yet) the tailgate switch. The other switches seem ok. So maybe a loop problem? Ok, thanks in advance! Cheers! |
