Question Clutch on the floor

My 2015 Volvo V70 D3 ( Mileage 99000) developed a problem with the clutch not returning when depressed and having to lift with foot to change gear. I suspect the cylinders by the dealership did not find any leaks to indicate that.

Any advise on the cause and don't want to pay the dealership for something I can fix on the cheap. I live in Stoke-on-Trent but station in Salisbury, therefore long drives at the weekends and wouldn't want to be stuck anywhere between the locations.

It could be leaking internally. Just because the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir is okay doesn’t necessarily mean there’s no leak. It sounds like they fobbed you off.

The symptoms you describe relate to a failing master cylinder and/or slave cylinder. Its not really a cheap job to do. The best option would be to find an independent specialist or trusted garage, as dealerships charge high prices for labour costs. You could save a lot of money by going elsewhere and getting the garage you choose to do a proper diagnosis.

I know this may sound odd, but have you tried greasing the clutch pedal (underneath)? (Before you go spending!)

Consider how long have you had the car and how many miles have you had out of it ? Everything wears out with use.

Temper this against the potential £1,000 bill that you are shortly likely to incur. Or at a minimum get used to the idea that you may have to spend out this sort of money whilst you investigate further.

In my opinion a failed clutch slave cylinder is not unusual at your cars mileage/age.

Because of the work involved in replacing the slave cylinder it's usual to consider replacement of the Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch at the same time.

I hope you are most fortunate with the outcome of your further investigations. Apologies, and I will be happy to be proved wrong, but I suspect the worst. Chin up.

Money on slave cylinder.

I've just had my gearbox changed over and it sometimes has a low pedal. Pulling it back with my foot and all well again. In my case probably a bit of air in the system as its new but I had one fail in a 18 month old XC70 with 90k on the clock many years ago.

Not an uncommon issue on the 2013-2016 M66 gearbox - it is the slave cylinder.

Had mine done under warranty on a XC60 D4 with 48k on it.

Personally I would use a good local garage, it's not too bad a job on a 2WD car.

Exactly the same happened to me 2011 XC70 D3. It was sh1tty fluid and the Master Cylinder! Flushed the brake fluid and had MC changed … and jobs a goodun. Have driven thousands of miles…no problem. Here was my thread:
