V70 tramlining
I have a V70 2.0D R Design, registered in 2009, which has covered 46,000 miles. The tyres are Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Asimmetrico 245/40 ZR18 on the front and P-Zero Rosso 245/40 ZR18 on the back. All tyres have around 3.5mm of tread and are evenly worn. The car has recently had a laser 4-wheel alignment check and a full service: in both the car was pronounced in good condition.
Despite all this, the car tramlines badly. Any motorway indentations or local road repairs in line with the direction of travel has it snaking quite noticeably. Does anyone have a similar experience and if so, did you change the tyres to another brand? What are the best tyres to use on the car and how good was the improvement? Any information would be helpful! Thanks. |

Hi,
What influenced your choice of the Goodyears? |

Had them on other cars, p zero's a bit hard imo. Let us know on your choice and if it affects the tramlining which i feel is common with the R design.
Some bridgestone potenza's would be my no 1 choice but would wear too quick for the mileage i do. Last edited by Ryu; Mar 11th, 2013 at 17:36. |

I've got the same 245/40 x 18 Pirellis and they do tramline and torque steer quite a lot.
Currently on 225/50 x 17 winter tyres and it has virtually eliminated it (doesn't look nearly as good though!) |

I would say it's the tyres rather than the wheels, heard good reports about the dunlops sports or most michelen are decent. The 40 profile tyre will be quite stiff aswell which doesn't help.

I have Michelin Primacy HP 225/50 R17s on mine and have not noted any tramlining.

I would venture that it's your 18" wheels with the 55mm offset that is to blame more than the tyres. Try a set of 17" wheels with 50mm offset and feel the difference.

I do notice it a bit on mine. Seems like these cars are very sensitive to the tyres.

I used to have a Mondeo ST200 which was terrible for that - had all the 'wheels in motion' alignments done and never cured it. Maybe it's the low profile tyres or stiffer springs on sportier models.
The first time it happened I nearly had a heart attack. Felt like I was suddenly hit by a 100MPH gust of wind from the side. |
