Factory fit they are on my 2006 XC70. I haven't been very impressed with the headlights since I got it about a month ago. So hopefully a pair of new bulbs with improve them.

If you have the P2 rather than a P3, (the handbook should say D2R) I and several others have been using the Ebay ones

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230558358754

they are pure white, came branded as orsram (can't say if genuine or not) but a fraction of the price of genuine.

I'm thinking of going for some Philips XtremeVision ones. £100 each but brighter is better for my old eyes

With HID's brighter is very subjective, as you are at a point where a standard pure white HID is way beyond the brightest H7/H1 etc, if it was a
a couple of quid then possibly, but £19 Vs £200, and you have no proof they are any brighter, they claim to be 'up to 50% more light on the road'

Its a very vague subjective claim, unlike the comparisons you can make on the standard halogen bulbs

if you do go for silly expensive, would be interesting to see a side by side comparison to cheapies

I know what you mean - if you read into it further it seems the 50% is made up of 'up to 30% more light on the road' and '20% more brightness'.

But what the hell, I ordered some off Powerbulbs with a code so £90 each.

Now got to get someone to fit them which no doubt requires the roof removing and the gearbox lowered. I fondly remember my old 1.6 Ford Capri where there was almost room to stand inside the engine bay without removing anything.

Guide for xenon bulb replacement.

there are various guides, I find it easiest to just whip off bumper, and remove headlights, its less than 20 mins start to finish, sounds drastic, but bumper removal on P2's are so easy.

Replaced one D2R bulb on my 2003 V70 today using cheap ( £13.99/pair) from a shop in Manchester , the new bulb is not branded and is claimed 5000k , the other bulb is original Philips D2R 4300k factory fitted and still ok after 10 years. The failed bulb was on the nearside and changed it in 5 minutes , no need for tools . Standing 20 yards in front of the car I cannot see any difference in colour or light output between the cheap chinese bulb and the Phillips despite the claimed difference in colour temperatures , maybe the cheap bulb will not last very long but looks ok to me . The failed bulb had a yellow tint for about a year then turned pink for a few days then stopped working .

I used to do all my own stuff back in the 80's. Even changed a couple of engines in a Capri I had. But these days I live in London so would be working in the road and let's face it, it hasn't stopped ****ing down for about 2 months!

Anyway, the Philips XtremeVisions are now fitted and are superb compared to the old bulbs. But the old bulbs were at the end of their life so that may have had some bearing on their performance.

My service light is now on so I'm going to get the DRLs switched off when it is in.

If anyone else wants the Philips ones, there is a Eurocarparts 25% off code floating about that the moment (EASTER25) so they work out at £80 each. Steep I know but cheaper than Volvo want for the bog standard bulb.
