Gearbox wanted for P1800
Hi
Does anyone know of a gearbox for sale? Ive got worn bearings on 3rd gear in my 1963 P1800 (b18) and looking for options - either source another box or get mine rebuilt . But if there is a good clean box out there that would be a good solution ( i had the overdrive refurbished already so its box only I'm looking for ). Thanks Mike |

If you have had your overdrive reconditioned it makes sense to follow this path with the gearbox. Buying a second hand m41 maybe false economy. I had mine reconditioned maybe 8 years ago for £200 plus the dreaded vat at MT Transmissions in Sheffield. Had no issues since. I took them a couple of m40 non overdrive with my m41 and they fitted all the best items from 3 gear boxes and fitted new bearings and gaskets.
They returned all the unused items in pieces, so if you do go down this path and MT need any obsolete bits (selector forks, springs, rods etc then I can assist for a small fee (a charity donation) as they are local to me. If Patrick still works there he is very knowledgeable on these old units. Good luck which ever way you go. Chris |

Thanks Chris
I gave them a call but it seems that things have changed in 8 years - they weren't interested . They Said that they couldn't guarantee getting parts and so wouldn't open up the box in case they couldn't source parts. I mentioned Brookhouse and Amazon have the 3rd gear bearings and even told them of your offer - but not interested. Thanks for the lead, but seems like a dead end! Cheers Mike |

Hi Mike,
Sorry to hear that. If you find someone to tackle it, feel free to contact me if parts are required. Best wishes, Chris |

Speak with Amazon cars or Brookhouse, they’ll know who can do the gearbox or may have one to sell. Finding a good condition M41 without a OD is no guarantee.

Who did the OD refurb? OD Spares or Overdrive services? One or maybe both of those can have your gearbox rebuilt at the same time as you're having your OD done. M40 boxes not hard to find. Synchros getting difficult but the ones working with the higher gears don't wear much so can be used for refurb purposes as they are all the same AFAIK.

As mentioned, try Overdrive Repair Services at Halfway, Sheffield. I had my o/d reconditioned by them, the owner originally worked at Laycock Engineering who made the o/d units and has passed his skills on to his son. Another very knowledgeable outfit.

Hi Chris
I have 2 transmission places that could help as long as I can source the parts so can I take you up on your offer if they need parts? Ive spoken to Amazon Cars who were really helpful and also Brookhouse so there are a limited amount of new replacement parts around and the main issue is that I won't know the problem until they take the box apart! Ive called round and quite a few places aren't doing gearbox refurbs ( including Overdrive Spares in Sheffield who did my Overdrive refurb ) So Local transmission guys and then source components seems to be the route forward! Thanks all |

Hi Mike,
If the parts your gearbox refurb outfit require are in the box of parts and in a re- usable condition, they are available to you. As I mentioned a charity donation and any postage fees is all I require. I know a guy had some synchro parts and layshaft from me sometime ago. Regards, Chris |

There was a gearbox guy in Aberdeenshire who I spoke to a few years back, knew the M40 but can’t remember his name. Will see if I can find his details.
Can’t find it but a few years back Amazon cars did the gearboxes in house for £420 plus vat.
