Had the same problem on my Passat TDi and that needed a new MAF.

be careful, the 850 TDI does not have a MAF, it has what's called a VAF instead (vane airflow), its basically a mechanical flap connected to a potentionmeter.

The V70 tdi although it has the same D5252T, has a proper electronic MAF.

I'm not really sure to be honest. All i know, is my car goes into 'limp mode' sometimes, and if i pull over and disconnect the VAF and clean out the contacts then re-connect them, the car is back to life again.

How you go about actually testing it i'm not sure.

Don;t be tempted to take it apart either, IIRC someone on here did and theirs never worked again.

Apparently these are £200+ from the dealer.

You may be better off sourcing a second hand one off ebay (they come up sometimes) or alterantively look for one from an Audi A6 which has the same engine, AFAIK they are both the same.

You need to read the codes. volfcr will work on a '96 Tdi. See www.ilexa.co.uk
