So... we've gone from trying to help a now-absent original poster to criticising each other.

That's 2023 fora in a nutshell.

Please can we get back to stuff relating to Volvos and stop criticising other members?

Fair enough. I intended no criticism of the OP. I was merely pointing out that one person's approach to buying and running a car can differ from the next bloke, and it's sad when spending your hard-earned cash in the best way you know to ensure happy and trouble-free motoring results in a disappointing experience.

I don't know the back-story here, but I get the impression that you two are having a pop at each other at every opportunity, and that needs to stop.

FWIW, though, I felt Andy's post was unnecessarily combative, and you actually make a good point here - the OP has asked a question, and he's got rather too much "attitude" from a few too many people for my liking. Please take a moment to consider your posting style, all.

I'm rather suspicious of this independent garage's quote. That seems like a huge amount of money to address the issue, even if calipers were required (which I suspect they're not!).

cheers

James

I'm also suspicious of that quote and therefore requested more information from the OP, but they've stopped responding, so we may never know the end of this story. They haven't looked in since 15.55 last Friday.

More generally, it's best to avoid criticising members if at all possible. Post #15 might well have put @YoY off. A post like that in my direction and I'd have been gone as well.

Nobody likes criticism or shaming, especially in front of others.

Retaliatory escalation or piling in on one side or the other doesn't help, either.

Why argue in front of the world?

A question or two seeking more information, or the suggestion of a modified approach are usually more effective.

Having said the above, a lot of people join the forum, ask a question, wait a day or two, and are then never heard from again. That's just frustrating all around, but it's also common human behaviour.

Time to get back to Volvos? (And that's advice to myself as well. )

I think it's a fine line. No one comes here wanting to be belittled but on the other hand, I take the impression that some posters seek only validation of their mistakes, poor decisions or ill-conceived ideas and then take exception when they find informed but contrary opinions rather than a echo chamber.

Sometimes, the best lessons in life are those hardest learned. However, to repeat myself for the sake of clarify, that's not a charter to have a pop at folks. Ultimately, I hold the same opinion as the poster in question but I'd likely have softened the blow a little.

Unfortunately this site has gained members who literally do nothing but that. They view this board solely as a means to vent their spleen, provoke discord and shout insults at the existing membership. In the many years I've been a member, I've found this forum to be invaluable to those with a genuine interest in maintaining their vehicles and imho, its future value and reputation would be best served by having the moderators remove their 'contribution'.

The forums that I frequent usually have a "report" button, which allows the reporter to notify the moderators of any post that causes them disquiet. I've occasionally used it on my favourite US music forum but never on this forum, largely because it's not occurred to me to do so. Looking ahead, I'll now keep it in mind.

This is a bit of a complex one, as I think the outwardly controversial post in this thread is actually making a good point (however badly expressed), hence it has remained.

As I said above, a good opportunity for all involved to consider how they express themselves.

cheers

James

I've not tried it, but I think this is the badger!

Thanks to those who are raising this as an issue. Most of us forum members here browse to learn a bit more about our Volvos, tap into the vast knowledge base, share successes and show off our cars or whatever else, but what they don’t want is criticism and insults. This is offset by the handful of sad, inadequate individuals who feel the need to argue, insult and otherwise troll this who are using the forums as intended. We should all use the report buttons when required and hopefully the moderators will have the teeth to remove such scum.

For the avoidance of doubt, that's not the post that I take exception to in this thread. As I've said previously, I wouldn't have couched the information necessarily as bluntly myself but the underlying point is valid and worthy of airing. Sometimes the best medicine might taste a little sour.

My issue is with the blatant trolls who bring nothing of value ever but are the first to ferment discord where it otherwise wouldn't have taken root, and to insult the general membership.
