Default Wanted 940/740 diesel

Hi I have been looking for a 940/740 diesel for ages, without luck, willing to travel

Still learning about 940's .......what makes a 940 Wentworth ?? and when did the diesel turbo and diesel turbo intercooler arrive. I assume they evolved on later cars

Many thanks

I don’t blame you for wanting one, my 940 was a super mile muncher with that 6 cylinder diesel.
High thirties mpg.

Hope you find a good one!👍

Hi, have had Mercedes D300 W124's in the past which are excellent engines, but the rust is getting to them now. The galvanised Volvo seems to be hanging in there much better and I still want rear wheel drive

Had an VW LT pick up truck with the 5 cylinder diesel and loved it. Very agricultural ;-)

Mine mostly does long runs, and I've averaged a smidge over 45mpg in the last 35k miles of driving

Good luck with the search! They're pretty rare beasts now. Mine hasn't been used much the last few years (since Covid) but will hopefully get out and about this month

The 760 diesel was definitely intercooled by 1990, although the 740 diesel wasn't.

I think it took until the 940 for the intercoolers to be standard - but they're an easy retrofit if you can find the parts

You are sensible to hold on to it bud!👍

Mine did over 40 mpg on a France trip, they seem to enjoy long journeys!😀

Funny isn’t it? There were two around on eBay before Christmas, were on for ages. Not bad ones either if memory serves!

I have missed two after finding a particular website, but found them too late unfortunately

Have just come across a 93 saloon, would rather the estate, but beggars can't be choosers

Just over 200K on the clock.

Thanks for the heads up on the turbo/intercooler

Lots of petrol estates and some really good looking ones as well

How many modern cars would last like this. Take a look at other makes of similar age and most are all but disappeared

Think I will sit it out for a diesel estate to come along, decided to be a chooser, rather than a beggar ;-)

Have you got a link to the saloon diesel? I do like seeing what saloons are left.

The derv is an excellent choice. I love mine, just shy of 300k and it’s brilliant-my favourite of the three in my driveway.

They are a rare bird now as has been noted, but worth holding out for a good one. They reward meticulous maintenance (oil and filter every 3000 miles or so, cambelt MUST be done every 50k as the top end is toast if they go, injector rebuilds every 60k or so, brake vacuum pump is cam driven and they have a habit of getting noisy-I replaced mine with a new pattern unit and the issue went away but they can require a pushrod replacement to fully cure the clacking) but if properly looked after they seem to be unstoppable.

I race go-karts nationally and do a lot of long journeys in mine, heavily laden with karts, tools and engines, usually towing a twin axle “tow a van” style trailer. Even with all of that behind/inside/on top of it, it still turns in decent mpg figures. Empty I can get over 40mpg on a run, filled to the brim and towing never less than 30. Best fully loaded run was from Dorset to Whilton Mill near Daventry, easy 38mpg!
