vacuum wipers
I have a 57 444 and want to put electric wipers on it in place of the vacuum wipers . I bought a complete electric wiper assy off a 65 544 only to discover the wiper spindles , that protrude threw the cowl. are in a different place on the cowl. Probably because the 65 cars had a single windshield and my car has a split windshield. My question is : Did any of the split windshield cars have an electric wiper motor? Perhaps there was a late 57 or early 58 that had electric wipers and , with a split windshield, has the drive spindles in the same place on the cowl. ???
I've searched here and on the web in general and can't find the answer yet I have to believe this modification has been done . I hope someone here can shed some light for me . |

Cuppy;
I cannot answer your specific question...but presumably you want to change the wipers to electrical to get a more consistent speed, which does not vary with engine load...if that is the case, and you find the mechanical solution of relocating the cowl protrusions using a later wiper mechanism too difficult, may I suggest retaining the vacuum operated wipers, but adding a vacuum accumulator in-line with the vac driving the wiper motor...this should hopefully reduce the speed dependency on engine load. I've seen these on 240s...they likely had something to do with the FI system, but I expect should be available inexpensively, used, and could be repurposed by you...they are identifiable in that they look like four connected plastic spheres of about 4" dia... obviously with Vac lines attached...just an idea...! thanks
I think all split window cars had vacuum wipers . I just spoke to the WIPERMAN in New York and he can rebuild my vac motor as good as new for 1 $135 bucks. That sound all right with me .
If I need extra vacuum I'll use your tip and thank you! |

Oh jeez, those vac wipers! I'd use any excuse to get rid of them, install electric. Yrs ago dad had a Ford pop with them, just hopeless. At least, on the Ford, there was an internal handle u could twiddle to operate them; i remember one long journey where i had to continuously twiddle for over 2 hrs. . . Nightmare.
In the interests of originalty, ok, but for your safety, fit electric! |
