Only in my 145 with B20A and that was doing 25MPG but more short runs. My brothers 144 with B20A would do 32-35MPG on a long motorway run!

Bear in mind we use full UK gallons not US short measures so you will need to convert

Thanks Bob, I wondered if my mind was playing tricks on me!!

I can only report what I observe:

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showp...&postcount=488

... the only explanation I can offer is that GAM is used almost exclusively for short runs around town (I have other motor cars that are much better suited to longer journeys). GAM is fairly new to me, but I have started keeping records to see how the longer term average works out.

I've just looked up the 122S on fuelly.com which suggests the average might be 20ish MPG (I know, it is an American site, so multiply the figures by 5/4 to get the imperial gallon equivalent):

https://www.fuelly.com/car/volvo/122

Here is a view of the data (attributable to fuelly.com):

I'd looked at this information previously, and so not been concerned that GAM was returning around 20 MPG on urban journeys. I find it more than a little interesting that you are getting 42MPG though; I have not really looked at carburettor tuning for the twin SU setup yet, but I may now do that sooner rather than later.

:-)

They also wear and folk adjust idle differently so multiple of reasons why fuel economy varies. Even a dirty air filter will make it run richer. Too lean isn't good either as will run hot. A wideband O2 sensor and gauge are a great mod, check fuel economy but also see if the engine is getting properly fueled when accelerating.

Mine gets about 26mpg. That's with a B20A and four speed, no overdrive. Spirited driving....as they say...

I don’t think there is much wrong with the setup Andrew, SUs are really simple instruments. I ran through the procedure today and everything seems fine - and the plugs are the right colour.

I’m pretty certain the explanation is just that I use GAM exclusively for short journeys, mostly around town; the Skoda, Porsche or even the RB are always better choices for longer journeys.

I’m planning to attend the VOC Trent Valley section meeting at Calverton in June, which will be about a 120 mile round trip - I’ll measure the consumption then.

:-)

The ideal trip. Lots of different roads. It’ll do Aunt Maud good.😀

Nothing surer it's the short runs that is the killer. Be interested to know what you get on your 120 mile run. Please let us know. My 42 mpg certainly surprised me as I usually expect about 32/33 and that is what I got with my original Amazon.
