Graeme,

I know from experience with a 164 with the same 3-speed auto box that it's a very poor, inefficient gearbox. I converted the 164 from automatic to manual, with no other changes, and the car felt like it gained 40% more power and returned much better mpg.

On the 265, you might want to stick with the 3-speed for ease or originality, but there are choices which would dramatically improve how it drives.

If I had bought that car I would convert it either to a late 760 4-speed overdrive auto gearbox (easy enough to obtain) or to a manual transmission.

The latter would be harder to find, but this forum member has the relevant parts for sale:

Yes, I've gone and bought a 265 GLE Auto to add to the S80, 440GL and 965 CD.

I just couldn't resist this 3 owner car in this condition, (it is better than these seller pics make it look), with ALL the contemporary toys - AirCon, Electric windows and mirrors and an FM radio with 8 track!!

It has some faults, but nothing that really detracts from the stunning originality of this car that How Many Left says is one of 7 on the road in the UK, (+ 11 SORN).

Sadly I won't make it to the National on Sunday with it, but it will be around, and you'll see it soon.

I'll put more pictures on when I've picked it up, but in the meantime - wish me luck!
Hi Graeme- I appreciate this is an old post abut when you bought this 265 GLE and was just looking at this car and noticed how similiar it looked to my late Dad's 265 Estate. Do you still own it or do you know who has this now by any chance? Any info grateful. Thanks

Hi all. Appreciate this is an old thread but would anyone know any more info about this BUR122T Volvo 265 please? My late Dad had one and wanted to ask a few Q’s. Thanks

Have a look on the gov mot history checker, looking at the cars condition then it should still be on the road.
