It did turn out to be the head gasket.
I pulled the head off, and while my son ran it over to a local garage who refaced it, I cleaned up the top of the block.
We then decided to regrind the exhaust valves (inlets were ok) then threw it all back together.
Total time taken 5 hours; total cost £40, including the head facing.
Try doing that on a Volvo!

Currently towing in France, at the max weight for this engine as it's only the V60 1.6 drive but doing surprisingly well.

When towing its always nice to have a little in reserve and not be right on the limit of car performance/weight etc

Its fine I have been towing for 7 years, up till now all petrol. The limit is much higher for every other diesel engine in the V60 range. Plus had high winds on return and it was very stable.

Hi Rich

Mine was coil springs.
As I had just collected the van it was not fully loaded but still had 80kg on the nose. The caravan brake is still on as I had just raised the 6 legs so it might not have been sitting fully on the car suspension (despite being locked on the ball).

To replace the CC I bought a Range Rover Sport 3.0d so will soon be finding out about air suspension. Looking forward to 700Nm of torque too.

Colin
