Market value for insurance purposes
Think I've written my v40 1.9d (115bhp) sport lux off this afternoon
Sunshine shining direct into my face as another driver indicated late to pull onto double yellow lines outside a school and as I passed him I've gone into the island in middle of the road - air bags gone off - oil leak all over road and severe front end damage - bonnet crumpled approx 6 inch & front bumper fallen off. I'm ok, still a bit shaken but need a new car asap so awaiting insurance assessor to see the car. Question is I'm insured for market value of the car but need some advise from peeps on here as to what that is. I bough the car for £3300 with 86k on the clock (its now done 105k) but had the clutch & dual mass fly wheel replaced at 100k and also had cambelt changed at 103k. Anyone any idea of its market value? I've seen another car same year (2004) same mileage (105k) same spec advertised locally for £3300 - would market value be anywhere near this amount. Thanks in advance |

I would expect that for my 04 plate S40 1.9D Sport with 54k on it. Thats what it was re-insured for.
Try whatcar.com - you get free valuations on it. Also, when negotiating the settlement get 3 adverts/examples to back you up for your value negotiations. Never accept first insurance offer - i used to work in this business and you have to negotiate upwards. Try looking at dyrdals garage in york - they have S40's in there and a V40 (but the S60 I wanted went too fast) Did see a 1.9D S40 but it was a phase 1.5. Good luck

Yeah that should be around the right sort of figure as its a sport lux and a diesel, I bought my '03 V40 1.9d sport lux for around £3500 a couple of years back but the phase 2s aren't really dropping in value and the diesel holds their value the best it seems, maybe at around 3k market value?
Also perhaps look at buying the car back as well, there will be quite a few parts on there that people might want although most things would be the front grill and lights! Glad you are ok though, seems like quite a bad accident but being a Volvo its done its job. |

Thanks chaps
Car confirmed as a write off - am awaiting an offer within the next 5 days as to what insurance company will give me - have full service history before I bought it as well as the receipts for things I've spent on it - circa £2000 in the last 18 months. Good news is that I've been to see another sport lux 1.9d today - same year, spec & mileage so going to check the paper work tomorrow and take for a test drive. Cheers again for the replies |

I agree with the advice given above.
To be honest, it sounds as if the car you have looked at today is sufficiently similar to give you the figure you are looking for. Sorry to hear about the circumstances, though, so I hope the potential replacement works out OK! David |
