Neither is the factory manual. I just got around to pulling my leaking pump.
(I know, I'm slow) seems the previous owner put the small seals on top.

Hows yours coming?

Wet huh? Sounds like Seattle.
I have mine almost cleaned up enough to put back together. I'm thinking about smearing a thin layer of Toyota FIPG sealant on the pipes and not sure about the upper O-rings. If I work quickly it should be fine.
Most don't mention sealant on the O-rings except one guy on a 4X4 site.
Volvo 303?
If all the cast surfaces are good no sealer should be needed but I am not sure I trust that. I sure don't trust the pipes as they have a bit of corrosion
(pitts)
Love to hear input and I am assuming Billy Smalls might too.

I usually add a small smear of sealant. It can be tricky to compress the top seal enough to get the bolt holes lined up, so can take some time to fit the pump.

Did mine in 2007 it was a (dreaded) Scan-Tech job. I only used a thin smear of grease to 'stick' the paper seal. Then used a bar to lever the pump 'up' into position.
So far all is well in 'waterpumpworld'

With the pump bolts not quite snug put a length of wood underneath vertically and put a bit of pressure on it using a jack. A smear of grease on the gasket will help it ease up a little. Tighten bolts, lower jack and remove wood.
A liitle silicone grease helps when fitting the pipe O rings.

Well I got it together and used Toyota FIPG in place of a gasket.
It almost worked. I added a length of tube to the lower hose and added water to above the water pump height and added water to the t-stat housing
then opened the t-stat to completely fill the pump. Spun it a few times and
it sealed everywhere less one bolt hole.
I did the jack pushing on the pump with a piece of wood also.

Now its airing out so I can seal the one bolt hole. (More FIPG)
I did reseal the current pump (recent, but leaking)
Now I know how to do it if anything fails I'll re-do with a new pump.
For now I am crossing my fingers. After I install the pulleys, hoses, radiator
etc.

Thanks for the tips!

Noticed the coolant level on my 164 getting low a couple of weeks ago- there were a few beads of coolant around the pump. So I found a new pump (£50 on eBay, not easy to find at a reasonable price) Going to use your instructions to change pump tomorrow so thanks for all the advice!
