940 rear wiper
Hi, replaced rear wiper blade on my '96 940 2.3, and the blade doesn't clear the window.
Aside from me not knowing how to fix this annoyance, is there an upgrade arm(v70, 850? ) that works better on the 940? Thanks. |

The original item should work fine, and I don't think anything would be any better.
If it is turning OK you probably just need a new arm. If its not turning get a replacement mechanism, 2nd hand is normally fine. |

If it doesn't 'clear' the window, i.e smudgy within the arc of the wiper blade either the give the glass a good clean, or maybe the spring on the arm has weakened.

If it's turning but not making a good enough contact with the window inspect the sprung hinge on the wiper arm carefully. The rear ones in particular get coroded and gummed up with spray, grit and salt.
Try giving the hinge a good clean then apply a few drops of oil and exercise the hinged bit by pulling the wiper arm away from the window and moving it back again a few times. Best not to let it spring back of its own accord though. This fix has worked for me over a number of years and several 940s. Needs repeating every few years. |

Yes, the arm is working fine.
Just that the blade is not being pushed against the window enough. Thanks for the advice, I'll clean and oil the hinge on the arm, or get a used one. |

I literally just fixed the exact same problem on mine today. Essentially the spring loses its ability to push the blade against the glass with age. I happened across a NOS Volvo arm on Flea-Bay last week for £15 which is now attached and happily working. However in spraying various things with WD40 to release them I found that the old wiper got some of its spring back. Not as much spring as the new one mind, but try the WD40 method as a quick-fix.
I also recently did the fix on the FAQ for the wiper washer valves (rear had stopped working completely) so now I have an as new rear windscreen cleaning system for £15 and about half an hour's effort.

My 1995 940 Estate's rear wiper had become a bit weary and wasn't pressing on the screen very well, but giving the spring a soak with the magic cure-all that is WD-40 and applying a bit of oil has ensured it now works like new! Thanks to everyone who posts on here. |
