Having (been) driven (on) a few country roads in Sweden, particularly the 'unmetalled' ones, I honestly couldn't see how an early RWD Volvo could be bettered on anything describing itself as a right of way by anything else 2wd. They were designed for 'marginal' road surfaces that other countries would class rally tracks.

Also been driven in V8 Landy in desert, hopelessly outclassed by a Toyota and G-wagon and got stuck in sand 10x more.

Things probably different if you live on the side of a mountain or regularly have to go up one. Then those 4x4 beasts make a lot.of sense. Waitrose car park, less so.

Couldn’t agree more about RWDx2WD suitability. My 245 has 8.5” ground clearance, perfect for unmettled surfaces.

So, there was another flurry of bidding activity at the end and the auction made: £4,755.00

I hope I'm wrong but this smacks of being shill again: a bidder with a very low eBay score (9***9Feedback score (1)) steps in with half an hour to go and helps the price up from £3,250, then wins the auction. I suppose it is possible, but I have a feeling we may see the red 240 advertised again soon.

:-)

Having some considerable experience of this for work, I'd say the bit in bold type wasn't right at all. Not that it matters one iota in this context.

Maybe what was really meant Alan is the driver was outclassed and the others just happened to be driving different vehicles?

When i had a 4x4 pick-up (with Truckman Top and cage for my tools) for work, when i first had to use the 4WD "in anger", i was hopeless. Once i had a bit of experience and self-teaching after listening to tips from people who green-laned recreationally, i got a lot better - it was a case of having to really as i was on my own despite many other people on site.

Maybe Dave, but that isn't what was said. This really doesn't matter in this context; I was just offering an opinion as one with quite a few years relevant experience (rather more than I have of Waitrose car parks).

I checked mine (Previously SYW320S) Registered 1st Aug 77.
V5C issued 16th Jan 2006;
mmm, questionable, I suspected it could have been a "bitsa". Some of the windows are from another car for one.
More investigation required me thinks.
Last MOT expired Nov 08, registered here Nov 07.
Could have been reassembled, put through an MOT and got punted across the water quickly before anyone was the wiser.
Now I'm worried!

Going off track on this topic?
See what I did there?

In my previous job, I was required to visit sites and quarries for material samples.
"Mud Plugging" was the term used.
My 1st was known as the Yellow Submarine, A 04 Nissan D22.
It had a split gearbox and a bench seat with 3 seatbelts (?).
I drove it through the 2010 snows, over a mountain in a blizzard (okay, not really a mountain!)
I once drove into a quarry and asked where the Lab was, I was pointed in the direction and made a B line for my destination.
I cut across what I thought was a gravel path, it wasn't!!
She went in up to her axles!!
Put it into L1 and she ploughed through, made a mess of their yard though!!
Also drove though flooded roads in Golden co. Tipperary.
Water over the wheel arches, but Clarkson did better by crossing the channel when the Toybota failed.
Next was a X Trail, then a Qashqai & finished with an Outlander.
All later cars had electronic 4-wheel drive, easier to drive, but not as fun as the yellow submarine!

Good pun: nothing is too far from the beaten track for this thread...

Really simple 4x4s are the best, my favourite was an ancient Suzuki SJ410 that I bought for our clay pigeon shooting club back in the mid-1990s. One of the chaps that worked for me made a bet that it wouldn't make it to Marrakech, so one summer leave I had to drive it there (with the girlfriend of the day, although I don't think we were as friendly by the time we got back). The motor car did make it to Marrakech (and back), but burned a gallon of oil in each direction.

... and so onto the next tangent to the Seriously? Thread...

The 2nd Gen Subaru Justy we ran for a couple of years was always game for a bit of rough.
