Default Door hinge

I was looking at the excellent thread about replacing a door hinge, and with such clear instructions it looked as if even I, with a little help, could manage the job. So I bought a LH rear hinge on Ebay - except that it turned out to be LH front! I obviously hadn't expressed myself properly, but it was a few weeks ago so and I've only just checked the package.

Rather than trying to find another hinge, is it feasible just to change the spring? That might avoid too much of a problem with re-aligning the door.

The only thing the thread didn't explain was how to re-seal the waterproof lining behind the trim panel. Would some carefully applied duct tape be adequate or is there some other way to do it?

I don't think it's possible to change the spring in a door hinge - although I've not tried so someone may have done it!

Looking at the thread on hinge replacement I don't recall the bitumen linings as shown there, only plastic linings which just stuck back down if peeled up carefully - possibly had already been removed.

If you have to break the bitumen ones I would suggest replacing them with some plastic sheet - cut from a heavy duty plastic bag and taped in place.

Hello angie, So the hinge you bought a lefthand rear hinge that turned out to be a lefthand front?
I take it you mean the hinge that allows the front door to open slightly and then hold it there and when pushed further it rides over the spring and stops when fully open?

Well heres a thing you might like to know?
If like most 240 owners your drivers door hinge is worn out ie it just swings fully open and doesn't stay there?
Then what you do if your a cheapskate like me is swap it for a rear door hinge as they are the same
The rear doors don't get used anything like the drivers one so they don't wear out so quickly.

So hold the rear hinge by the front one and compare them.

Hope this helps.
Regards Brian.

I believe the front and rear hinges are interchangeable, so you should be OK.

As a fact, they are interchangeable on the 1991 240 GL spares car I bought. I used the doors on my 164 and I swapped the hinges front to rear. They work fine and the fronts and rears were stamped with the same part number.

So, by accident, you have ended up with a good solution! Rear hinges get less wear of course.
