Weekend drive - from Town centre to Town centre via 80 miles of motorway and the computer was inidicating 6.7l/100km (42.2mpg) - cruising at 70mph.
The engine/car/gearbox appears to be really efficient at lower speeds - but does ramp up pretty quickly above 70mph - is now horrific when cold and does seem to chew fuel in the lower 3 gears. Hyper-miling is the best way to get the most out of the car. |

pushed it a bit this time ...
The range that is, pulled up to the pump with 10 miles range showing on the computer and the thinnest of lines on the fuel guage; I had to stop then move at the pumps at which point the range came back at zero with nothing showing on the fuel gauge - so I guess I ran it quite low - also then filled with 71 litres (ooops!)
So with 765 miles from the tank that works out at 49.0 mpg while the whole life average is now at 47.0 ... I can live with that |

I have a one month old 2.0D. I live in Central London and my car is returning at the moment with only 900 miles under its wheels, an average of 38mpg. On a recent trip to Yorkshire (400 miles return) the car averaged 48.5mpg. Good I think for such a large car with a tight new engine.

My V70 2.0d R Design is now 5 months old and with 14k on clock. My commute to work is 47.5 miles each way with 41 miles on a straight motorway run. The fuel computer shows 39.5 mpg which I consider quite poor. My previous company car was a 2007 VW Passat 2.0 TDi 170 BHP DSG, and apart from being a much better and more powerful car it also returned an average 46 MPG.
So far not impressed with the the V70, and not just cos of the MPG. Service not proving great either. |

Hi Welshpedro, Interested to read your post as after reading others I was hoping for some improvement in my 2.0d RD V70's mpg after a few more miles (my sept 09 car currently has 6500 miles) Based on my 35 mile (of which 24 are on the motorway) each way commute plus usually one or two longer trips each tankful my mpg averaged over a tank varies between 39 and 44 (actual) computer seems to be about 1mpg optimistic. Some things I've noticed are that 1) it doesn't seem to like Asda diesel - used this twice and both tankfulls were under 40mpg, even though same type of driving, 2) it does seem to like Shell diesel - used twice and both tankfulls returned 44. Other supermarket brands fall somewhere in between.
3) You can really tell when the DPF does a regen as you can watch the MPG fall over that 10-15 minute period. Mine seems to do this roughly every 3 tankfulls and you can be driving along at a steady speed and notice the average mpg start to fall - switching to instant mpg it is only reading about 30mpg. 10 minutes later the instant suddenly goes back to 45 and you are fine again but that period really makes a dent in the average for that tankfull. Regarding your VAG 2.0tdi it sounds like you were lucky (or I was unlucky) my previous Audi A6 2.0tdi had a bag of nails of an engine. It was noisy, rough, vibrated, drank oil like it was going out of fashion and even though the A6 is lighter than the V70 its average consumption was about 2-3 mpg down on the V70. The audi's mpg did improve gradually over the first 30-40k miles so hopefully there is still hope for the V70's to improve further but I don't actually think its too bad. |

Hi
I have a 2 week old V70 2.0D SE LUX, I have done 1800 mainly motorway miles already and the computer says 44.2 average which I think is fantastic for such a large car. I have had a 2006 S40 and a 2007 V50 both with the same engine which would do around 45mpg. I have to say as far as the quality of the car is concerned I think it is brilliant, very quiet and refined. |

Mine can now get better than the stated figures on mixed driving - BY CHEATING.
Filled up the car last week - and for the first 50km I ragged the nuts off it - even then the computer was stating 11l/100km (25.5mpg). This weekend I drove to the in-laws - 70 miles each way + town work while there - and a short drive up to the shiny toy shop 10 miles away. Parking up yesterday evening - the computer was reading 7.2l/100km (40.2mpg) |
