it will work audio wise but the display and steering wheel controls are likely not to work and could cause havok next time you have a software download to the car ..

Would one have to go through the reset procedure to replace my HU-803 for an aftermarket audio unit, or is there no need?

No, no need to do a reset if you install an aftermarket HU. You can get a double din facia for the Volvo and put in a Kenwood or Alpine unit. If you have an amp under the drivers seat its a bit more fiddly but if you can use a soldering iron, have a reasonable understanding of basic car electrics and are not afraid of taking bits of trim off, then you can end up with a very nice piece of kit. I did mine a couple of years back and there is a post somewhere here with the details, but basically I now have Radio, TV, DVD, Ipod, satnav, bluetooth and rear seat entertainent.

I thought you had to use VIDA and tell the car it dosn't have a Volvo radio if you remove it?

Mine didnt. The steering wheel controls dont work, but apart from that its perfect. I cant imagine that Volvo would put a genuine/non genuine radio flag in the software.

When I did mine, I did first try and get an auto electrician to do it who refused on the basis that it wasnt possible on Volvos, so clearly there is an air of mystery about them, but once you rip them apart, its little different than any other car.

Attached are a couple of pics

I have an XC90 so it must be different to the V70 although the facia looks the same. VIDA has been known to turn the car into a brick upon finding a non OEM module the next time it was hooked up.

It must be different as the XC90 has optical connections and you'd have to have had to strip them all out and reprogram with VIDA.

Looks a nice neat install.

The dealers cannot over write the software in these units. Also second hand integrated key fobs (KIR) cannot be re-programmed to another car even by the dealers. Although these need a software download to be programmed, the dealer also needs the two unique codes that are supplied with the original packaging for each remote. These codes are not kept on record.
hi, i see a trident, i used to work on them at hatfield

Are c70's upto 06 affected by the ecu knowing what electrcal items are susposed to be on what car? Just wondered as im new to Volvo's but are thinking of buying either a c70 t5 or a s60 t5? Dont like the idea at all of not being able to fit second hand electrical items radios etc!!!

Yes, definatly. You can't fit a second hand Volvo radio safely but you can have the ecu programed to accept a none Volvo aftermarket radio. The Volvo radio's are very good though.

No point in designing a security system that can be overidden is there?
