Default S60 Charging Battery Advice Needed!!

Hi Folks. I'm confused! My battery needs to be charged as at present Volvo check at Stockton Mills showed it at 68%. Maintenance guy said it needed to be charged till full but to disconnect all leads from the battery before doing so and connecting to the battery terminals. Said that just running it won't provide the required charge.
The service book simply says to connect the negative to the engine block & positive to the battery. I'd sooner NOT disconnect the leads as I fear this will clear all internal settings?? So, what to do? It's an S60 2011 D5. Getting low battery message at times so want it sorted before heading to France in a week's time. Would appreciate comments.
Cheers,
SR.

Both battery terminals aren't that hard to get to anyway?

You should be able to just hook up positive to batt and neg to engine block as per manual.

There you go then, do that.

The important thing is to not connect the charger to the battery negative terminal whilst it's still connected to the car as it messes with the car's electrical monitoring system.

And on the subject of chargers, use an 'intelligent' one. CTEK are amongst the best. Not cheap but we have two in the family.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the replies. Confirmed what I thought was best to do. Couldn't understand the Dealership Service saying to disconnect the battery leads before charging especially as I'd said about connecting to the engine block as per manual.

"The service book simply says to connect the negative to the engine block & positive to the battery." This is for jump starting the car isnt it? if your charging up the battery then just remove both battery leads & connect the charger direct to the battery & charge it up.

Yeah, that's what I was told to do but worried that disconnecting the battery completely may affect the electronic settings. Then I may need a re-set code which I've not got. But, if you know otherwise, then do please reassure.
Here's,
SR.

If you can avoid disconnecting the battery (*hint, you can), avoid disconnecting the battery.

There is no need to disconnect the battery and it does not matter which order terminals from the charger are connected.... though best practice would be to connect -ve last for the only reason if you connect it first and then drop the +ve lead onto the body work you may get a short circuit.

If you have an intelligent charger (like a CTEK MX5) then have a look to see if you have an AGM battery, since the charger has a setting for AGMs. I think the stop-start varieties of S60 use AGM batteries.

A question too from me to the more experienced S60 owners, does charging the main battery in situ (using batt positive terminal and an earthing point) also charge the secondary stop-start battery?
