Default D5 215 vs d5 220

Hi everyone

I am considering a xc70 late model. I can see the last xc70s had the d5 220 engine. The quoted mpg figures seems considerably higher than the d5 215, particularly the urban figure.

I was wondering this is a true difference seen in the real world and if there was a choice between the two, which would people pick?

Thanks!

Our XC70 from 2016 is the D4 (181 hp). The main difference compared to the D5 from 2012, which we also have, is the higher gear ratio for the 2016. Makes it less of a towing car, but at the same engine speed the older one does 107 km/h and the newer 115 km/h. The gear ratio would be the same for a newer D5.
Still, there's no big difference in consumption. They both do something between 6 and 7 l/100 km if you drive nicely. In spite of the D5 being a 230 hp/470 Nm version, compared to the D4 with 181 hp/400 Nm.

I would pick the 220 bhp engine because it is ULEZ-compliant.

^^^ Euro 6 , this and the fact that it will hold a better resale price because of it, as more cities jump on the emissions cart. Linking this in with my MPG post and GEARING post, mine is a 2016 220 bhp D5 and on my current French trip I tried to assess the gearing and as best as I could tell, 2000 rpm gives my car 120 kmh. So different gearing again from @ a person’s D4 ?
Also not sure if the D5 215 bhp had s/s , which would account for the big urban difference. I turn mine off most of the time, but quickly switch on if I know it’s a long stop ( over a minute). As you can see the achievable mpg is very very good for the size of car, but it is not really an urban car. Even with s/s that will knock down the mpg to around 40 mpg with a light foot, where as 54 mpg is my best yet on a long run. ( prob about 52.1 mpg in real terms). Best off luck in your search.
BTW mine is Silver, and although a lovely bright shiny looking car, it doesn’t have the ‘depth of color and deep luster’ that some other colors have. Even the oyster that I liked doesn’t seem as nice in the flesh. The metallic dark red is lovely as it the dark blue etc.

Totally agree. My 2012 XC70 is not ULEZ compliant and it is an expensive nuisance! Long weekends in London cost me an extra £37.50 just to bring the car into town! And you get an extra 5 bhp.

Thanks for the replies.
The car I am looking at seems to come up as Euro 5 despite being the D220. Am I correct in saying that only cars made after a certain date became Euro 6, even if the engine was the same?
THanks!

It’ll be a 2016 car that you need, a 16 or 66 plate.

Where are you getting the Euro 5 data from?

If you put the registration number into a ULEZ checker then you will get a definitive answer regarding ULEZ.
