Park assist pilot.
Does this actually work?
Every time I've tried to use it I have a queue of traffic whilst the car decides what it's doing that I end up having to cancel it and park manually. Even when it says it has found a spot, the car doesn't seem to know what it's doing and unless I manually intervenes I'd crash. |

You still have to apply the stop and go pedals and change from reverse to forward manually, all it does is apply steering and measure the distance and inform you on the screen when to stop or move or change gear.

It does work but it's a bit of a (slightly unnerving) party trick. I have had it on my last four Volvos over the past 10 years or so and have used it precisely twice.
It's just too slow to be useful in anything other than quiet traffic conditions.

I don't find it particularly useful. It's a gimmick for those who can't park.
I have had it on the last couple of cars and I don't find the Volvo version any better or worse than those. It works fine but in perfect conditions and is useless with a queue of traffic as it takes too long to faff about. I have however never been able to get this or any other car with it to reverse into a drive in space like those in a supermarket. I don't need help with it but they all claim to do it and I'll be damned if I can get them to recognise it and do it on the few occasions I tried out of interest. I can reverse into spaces much smaller than the car will recognise as suitable.

For reverse parking in a bay it's slow and pointless.
When trying to squeeze between two cars for a parallel park it's remarkably effective. I can do the same job but not quite as consistently. Used to use it all the time to get it into the slightly-too-small spot outside the house. If you use it note that the parking sensors are muted until you're very close to the vehicles you're parking between. Also liked the "exit space" feature. I never really figured out where the front of the V90 was and have impaired depth perception anyway, so this was helpful. |
