The jump can really any time when hot or cold but doesn’t seem to effect the performance of the gear change , it seems to happen one in 5 selections.

My local garage can change the gear box oil but only Volvo can do the updates. The only problem is that they want £144 to even do a diagnostic check before any draining is carried out.

Would you go to the independent first , have the fluid changed, tell Volvo Stourbridge and then run their own diaganostic and do the updates. I know £300 has been suggested but I think this will end up much more if I go to a dealer or just live with it . The XC60 has done 124K
I paid £280 a few years ago for a transmission flush, new oil, and software update… which is what I based my £300 figure on.

If you see this in time and you have one local it's £3.99 for a double 250ml bottle of either petrol or diesel treatments in Lidl.

Just recently purchased this car

Sometimes when you put the car into drive there is a significant clunk/snatch and lurch forward which is alarming. Sometimes its quite smooth and normal

Any thoughts why please and could this be a major problem?

Thank you
You have bought someone else's problem car, yes it is likely to be serious.
you should take it up with the seller !

This is well known now in any volvo dealer and they should know what to do.

It is oil leaking past piston ring type seals on the Gearbox mainshaft hence low oil pressure .
Volvo brought out a fix in the factory in about 2013 by introducing improved metal seal rings .

They introduced a software around 2012 to allow auto adaption routines to be carried out to raise the oil pressure above it's normal limit to allow for this leakage and after the special adaption road test when in Adaption mode it will self adjust and if the internal oil leak is not too bad it will be fine.

If it is not fine it will need the improved seals fitting on the mainshaft. This involves taking the torque converter and front clutch out, not a bad job once the gearbox is out.
