Not having a valid road tax disc on display is not a police matter. Only traffic wardens or clampers for the DVLA issue tickets for this.
Not having insurance on a vehicle on the public highway is an offence dealt with by the police.
If the council or other government body maintain the grass area then it is classed as the public road even if it is an offence to drive on it as in the footpath.
Vehicles that are sorn'd that are caught on the road are dealt with by the DVLA not the police.

A bit over zealous by the police maybe? They could have simply informed you and given you a ticking off and given you chance to move your land rover, seeing as there was no intention of causing an offence.

A few years ago I think thats exactly what they would have done. There doesnt seem to be any leeway nowadays.

Bit of a long shot, but you could tell them that it wasnt you that parked it there. The person that parked it there would be the one liable for the fine. Maybe you dont know who this person was? hint hint.

One of my friends was recently stopped by the police because his road tax had expired - he bought the car last year and thought the dealer had provided 12 months cover rather than the 6 months that were actually on the car (or so he says..........)

Anyway, all the police can do is report any offender to the DVLA so there are definitely no points involved.

I understand the DVLA have the ability to fine offenders an £80 penalty and any back tax up to the present date so looks like you will be out of pocket but still have a clean(?) licence.

My brothers car got caught by a policeman for not having a valid tax disc on display. The police CAN get you for not having tax on a car as they are law enforcers. The notice was slapped on the windscreen with a bright red piece of paper noting that the officers have "witnessed" a vehicle not displaying a tax disc and the rest is history. They class that you have broken the law.

As for not knowing that the dealer hadn't taxed the car for the 12 months, did they not get their renewal notification through the post???

Rant over

The police are increasingly pulling off a VERY sneaky tactic. They will write you a ticket for a 'crime', and if you pay it, you've admitted guilt. If you say "oi, that's not actually a crime, you tarts", they just say....er...good point, and let you off. This is certainly happening in the Derby area.

My 340 (which incidentally used to be 5lab's ) was today given a ticket for not displaying a parking permit in an area which is not signed as being a permit-holders zone. I'd left it in the glovebox after a few days away. Notes were popped through the door stating that there was a "neighbourhood watch permit scheme" in effect, but I'm calling BS on it. What's to stop an innocent member of the public parking in the road, popping to a house around the corner, and coming back to find a fine? There is NO warning at all. How can that possibly be legal?

Had the copper bothered to run a plate check, he'd have seen that the car is registered to the house it's parked outside. Did he bother? NO. He had time to write out a ticket though. ****er.

Sorry, I'm ****ed off with the Police at the moment. Did they prosecute the drunk pedestrian who ran in front of my car, causing £1k+ of damage, not to mention the emotional trauma of seeing a Polak draped across my bonnet? NO. Did they even bother attending the scene when a radio was stolen from a car outside my house? NO. But do they have time to write out illegitimate parking tickets? OH YES.

GRRRRR! I don't know about you, but I don't pay a council tax contribution to them so they can be of no use to me, whilst at the same time making life difficult. Don't even get me started on TV licensing...

cheers

James

I'd tell them where they could shove there 3 points and get on with some proper police work for a change.

Were you driving the vehicle, no
were you in the vehicle, no
was the vehicle even on the road, no

Used to have quiet abit of respect for police but not anymore
