Default Rumbling Differential - Check this first

Hi

I bought a 73ES for spares off ebay and realised it was too good to break, and so restored it. (Won't be doing that again!)
I was dissapointed to have a very noisey differential above 50 mph once I got it back on the road.
Rumbling in float and whining in drive at certain speeds.
Also under certain road undulations a vicious bang, like the exaust was knocking on the frame. Which it wasnt.
So instead of stripping the diff off the car and flouncing off to have it rebuilt, at great expense, I decided that I would change all the oils in the drive train.
This did not help much. (OK not at all! I even bought AMS Oil! expensive as it is extracted from a small gland in snakes?)
However in the recesses of memories of my last P1800e (26 years ago) i remebered that soft engine mounts were an issue.
There was no doubt the gearbox mounting was a bit soft and had dropped a bit. Well actually about 1/4". So I replaced it not really expecting a result.
However - Major improvement!
Now I am not saying its silent, but its made a very big difference.
The banging noise has gone too, as this was the prop hitting the tunnel (nasty).

Hope this helps someone save time, tears and money!

Good tip,

it is also worth lubricating the UJ's and teh prop centre support bearing. These can often be causes of transmission noises.

Without stripping them down all you can do is give them a soaking in penetrating oil.

I wouldnt advocare penetrant oil as it could wash out the grease in sealed for life bearings. Those UJs that have a zerk fitting then you can recharge after penetrating oil but the general view is to recharge with new grease and dispell the old grease.

If you have grease nipples then yes regreasing is teh answer but on sealed ujs then without stripping them penatrating oil is about the only option. If that helps then a stripdown and pack is going to be worth while.
