Phone Book Display on V40 from Mobile Phone

I use my Samsung S4 via bluetooth in my '14 plate V40. Sound quality is fine etc., but the phone book listing/selection is difficult because the name listing is always sorted by First Name then Surname. On the phone itself, it is listed Surname then First name!
Does anyone out there know how I can get the in-car system to sort/list by Surname, please?
It's driving me mad and I'm feeling unsafe trying to use it!

I have a Galaxy S5. Sort by "Family Name" and Display contacts by "Family name first" are my options.

You have 'surname' and then 'first name' maybe that is what is confusing the car settings - worth a try setting them both as surname?

Thanks for that. However, my phone is set as you recommended and always has been. Yet the list still appears on my car screen (and searches on) given name first!!!

There must be something I'm missing!

Unfortunately, I don't have a V40 - I drive an S40.
However, my wife picks a new v40 up on Saturday - I'll have a go with various settings on my Galaxy on the new motor and see if I get the same scenario as you .

Have you tried mixing up the two options you do have on the phone to see if any combination works? (not that there are many!!).
Then again, I don't know what options the car has so that may be the overriding factor at the end of the day.

Sort by: Given Name or Family Name
Display Contacts by: Given name first or Family name first
You're definetely changing both options, not just the the first one?

At least I've got an excuse to fiddle with the wife's shiny new car on Saturday

Done that! Still got a problem!

Firstly, after a little experimentation, I think it is because the car system seems to only display exactly what is entered on the phone initially. i.e

Entered; - on phone; - on car;
John Smith - Smith, John - John Smith
Smith, John - Smith John - Smith, John
Smith John - John Smith - Smith John

The phone sorts as requested but the car display remains as entered.
Unfortunately, all my contacts are entered as "John Smith" - hence my problem.

Secondly, while experimenting I was confused by the reference to two phone books showing on the car - one entitled "BT Phone Book" and the second "car phone book" with different contents measured e.g.6% and 1%. Pressing to clear phone books only clears the car phone book initially - repeating clears the BT book as well!

What the hell are these and how do they work? I'm very confused! Any help would be appreciated.

I've still got my problem and the local Volvo dealer is unable to help.
