Practical Classics December 1999 Volvo140/240 Buying Guide
Hi all,
I came across a Volvo 240 buying guide from Practical Classics magazine from December 1999 on ebay. I managed to win the auction and it was a nice read so I thought I would share. https://tinyviking.ie/uploads/Practi...ying-Guide.pdf (13.7MB) |

Thank you for sharing. The cypress green one is identical to the 1971 model I owned. It was a wonderful car on Norfolk lanes, but with the B20A and no overdrive, motorway driving was a noisy experience.

The funny thing is I have never had the slightest hint of rust in any of the four places highlighted in the article.
Under the tailgate cill, rear wings where the inner wing joins the outer along the top of the wheel arch, cills at the front of the rear wheel arch, and I have seen the windscreen scuttle eaten away in holes, yes. |

Great to see this article again ... I've got the magazine (somewhere) but haven't looked at it in ages. I'm sure it influenced me in buying both my 240 wagons, and my genuine enthusiasm for both models [I previously nearly bought a sound 1969 145 in BRG - with the 2-part stamped alumunium grille & opening rear windows], and ever since regretted not doing so as I think it went to the Scrappers soon after.
And after using it for over a dozen years as my solid daily driver, family transport, holidays, etc. (including many enquiries on here for lots of issues - thanks, guys) reluctantly SORNed my rust-free 240SE when it failed the test on several things two years ago, intending to do the work but never got it done. I have over this time ignored various offers to take it for Banger racing as wanted it to stay part of the ever-dwindling number of good runners, but would now contemplate these as some oik decided to set fire to it on 20/11/21 and burnt out the headlining & spare tyre but not the seats [deep blue stripe] as they were covered ... Offers Now Considered [I know this should be in 'Sales'].

Thanks, Stephen ... apart from the many times shared with my family (and I was a late Dad), I enjoyed it for its great design and driving quality - even if a little dated. My current vehicle - an 850 /V70 - 'though more modern & sophisticated, is not so rugged .. nor so high & long internally, quite a disadvantage vis-a-vis its older brother .. and with no gutters I can't have a roof-rack, only a half-and-half 'load carrier'. And I probably won't ever own such a good old car again.
