Afternoon, I recently took my egr valve and cooler off to resolve the blocked cooler issue. My car has just passed 152k, and has had the numerous fixes from Volvo via the original owner. I split the cooler and filled it with brake cleaner, but this did nothing at all. I ended up using Mr muscle oven cleaner and a jet washer. What a perfect job this was. It took a few attempts due to the amount of black crop inside the cooler, but it ended up working perfectly. A word of caution about the use of Mr muscle and contact with aluminium, it will attack it if you leave it on for a prolonged period. Simply spray it into the finned pathways, leave it for a couple of minutes and apply the pressure washer, and it should be OK. Mine has been running much better for the last 8 weeks, and the code hasn't come back.

Zeb, apart from a very thin layer of soot on the egr valve interals, it's was fine, springing back nicely and moving freely. I didn't touch it with the cleaner, I just wiped it and put it back together. The main mess was the cooler system.

VEA D4 Update
Thought I'd post this as a source of info for those wondering about the longevity of the VEA D4 given recurring EGR/EGR Cooler Issues. I bought my V70 D4 approx just shy of 2 years ago with 105K miles on the clock. It had two EGR coolers and one EGR valve replacement, as well as the cylinder head and valves, disassembled and repaired. The EGR/Cooler work was carried out at 82k, the car has now just reached 158k with no issues whatsoever.
My driving has very much been long distance which is probably optimal to avoid soot buildup etc. I have just had the ECM software update carried out as part of the manifold recall (yes I know!) Wondering if anyone else has had a similar outcome after the rectification work has been carried out? |

Engine braking
Hello,
I was not able read the whole thread but studied the issue comprehensively. I bought used V70, D4204T20 (88kW D2) with around 175k kilometers on the clock. According to Volvo, the car is up to date with all modifications done by previous owner. In last two months the turtle started showing up. The error code is P00BC00. I tried following: - inspected leaks - fitted a new MAF - cleaned MAP - cleaned EGR and cooler The error shows up still. It leaves me puzzled. The error pops up usually when I brake using engine downhill. I have data when from one of the occurrences. After the error EGR went to 0%. I was checking also coincidence of exhaust and intake pressure reading. AFAIK it leaves with options: - sticking EGR - EGR clicks when closes otherwise the movement fluid. - broken MAP sensor - clogged pipe to the Exhaust Pressure sensor (EMAP). I had the sensor out and the pipe looked ok but could be clogged elsewhere. I do have other data logged and can generate graphs from different sensors. Thank you for any hints. This is the VEA engine (D4204T20), 4 cylinder, 1969 ccm. EGR is the same as on D4 down to the part number. I'm experiencing similar issues and symptoms.

I'd guess that the EGR valve is sticking open

That is my fear too.
It is a bit sticky at the end. I was not able to get rid off stickiness as I was cleaning it. It is closing with a click. Otherwise it is moving freely. Is it possible to dismantle the EGR motor to check the gearing? I wish I have some broken EGR to play with. Here is a little video from what it is does on idle when it is closing:
