240 General: Driving lights

Hi all, I have a 1989 245, I have hd a problem for a while with the driving light on the near side, daytime running light works intermitent, I have tried all sortd of things but now not working, but will work when headlight on, it is a double filliment bulb, so I decided to buy a second hand unit, thought, problem solved,
NOOOOOO, for some reason it has a single filliment bulb and only one connection in the bulb holder unlike mine which has a double connection, I have looked and looked on Volvo sites but can;t find out why it's different, they all seem to be the same from 1981, can I use the single filliment bulb with the other side, which has a double filliment and is there a relay that controls this.

You can get the bulbs (21/5w) with either offset pins or parallel :~
If the parallel is used you need to watch how you install it for the selected light to show.

Post 1986 cars were fitted with dim-dip and this means that a single-filament lamp is used; 1981-86 cars use a 5/21W dual-filament lamp and holder.

The problem is possibly with the holder if the problem is intermittent. Take the assembly out, remove the bulb itself, clean and GENTLY bend the terminals in so they make better contact and see what happens.

There is a small riveted ring connector on the body of the light unit between the plug harness and the bulb holder. On mine most of them had become very loose causing intermittent bulb problems.

Putting a shim under the connector to keep it tight, or soldering it solid, should completely solve this.

Just been sorting similar today - I found swapping the bulbs to the other side fixed it for now haha
