Default 'Chuffing' sound from petrol engine

Morning All,

Our C30 1.8 petrol has developed what I can only describe as a 'chuffing' sound that seems to be coming from the auxiliary belt end of the engine.

Any suggestions on possible causes? I will remove the aux belt tonight to see if it disappears.

Thanks in advance,

Josh

I have this problem too! 2005 S40 Petrol 1.8

Also my MPG seems to be pretty low... But I think that may be unrelated?

Anyway I took it to a garage and they said they couldn't hear the noise

I did a little investigation last night and it seems to be coming from the aircon compressor, the noise gets quieter as everything warms up. I will disconnect its drive belt and see if anything changes.

Pretty disappointed if this turns out to be the case as the car only has 50K on the clock and would have expected this component to last much longer?

Cheers,

Josh

Just to complete this I disconnected the AC drive belt and the noise disappeared. I can detect a tiny bit of side-to-side play on the pulley and have ordered a replacement compressor.

Cheers,

Josh

Thanks for the update

I see you live in Letchworth which is pretty close to me. Do you think you'd be able to have a listen to mine to see if it's a similar noise?
